Girls Empowerment Programme: A new training tailored for peer educators on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

Jagriti Child and Youth Concern Nepal (Jcycn) with the support of KANALLAN organized a three-day “Residential Training on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. The training was organized from 15th – 18th July 2022 in Sauraha, Chitwan, with a participation of 36 including Ms. Bishnu Maya Pangeni, Public Representative of Devchuli Municipality. The training was targeted to improve the awareness and knowledge on different aspect of SRHR to provide a respectful, secure, and fulfilled human rights approach to sexuality and reproductive health needs.
The introduction and welcome speech were given by Mr. Tilottam Paudel, chairperson of Jcycn, before the training got underway. Following that, Mr. Deepak Sharma, the general secretary of Jcycn, gave a brief summary of the training’s objectives and the topics that will be addressed during the training.
The main objectives of this training is to provide a respectful, secure, and fulfilled human rights approach to sexuality and reproductive health needs, to encourage safe practices for menstrual hygiene and health, to specialize in providing, evidence-based sexuality education across various fields, and to raise awareness and demand for SRHR services.
By providing sexual and reproductive health and rights services and education on sexual and reproductive health, resource person educates girls about their health options, building their independence and self-reliance.
Ms. Hima Devi Mishra, resource person started the training with the concept delivery of sexual and reproductive health and rights, followed with the introduction on importance of sexual and reproductive health and rights. The participants exchanged stories about their first menstrual day. The trainer emphasized on aspects of sexual and reproductive health while explaining the various components.
The detailed presentation on Importance of menstrual hygiene management among girls and women along by showing the menstrual management materials, family planning/contraception methods. This session was explained with the help of presentation on reversible methods of birth control, contraception methods, hormonal methods, fertility awareness, emergency contraceptive pills. Moreover, the trainer showed all the kits and taught various methods of using to the participants. Session on “Safe abortion rights and policy in Nepal” was explained with the help of presentations with a detailed discussion on methods of abortion, legal provisions of safe abortion services.
The importance of sexual and reproductive health and rights was discussed and some reflection was thrown by the participants. Participants were asked to share the learning of day 3 through a balloon bursting game. Participants also provided feedback on training contents and training delivery. At the end of the training, feedback from participants was received. The general feedback of participants about trainer was very positive as majority of the participants fully agreed and were appreciative of trainer’s level of knowledge, style and the efficient use of training material.
The final day of training came to an end with the closing session and certificate distribution ceremony. Closing ceremony of the training was led by Mr. Paudel and Mr. Sharma. The ceremony was initiated with a note of thanks and they addressed the participants and asked about their learning experiences and distributed training certificates.
The participants acquire a great deal of new knowledge and an overall understanding of the importance of this training in their lives. In addition, Peer educators will conduct and follow up household visits in surrounding communities to help create an enabling environment that promotes knowledge and awareness, and increases access to youth- friendly sexual and reproductive health and rights services.

The peer educators along with the participants now have more knowledgeable information about the subject of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. Moreover, they try to eliminate SRHR stigma and related discrimination in their communities. It is obvious that the training objectives were attained in terms of a thorough understanding of the SRHR based on the input from both participants and peer educators. The young girls will now enhance the abilities to fulfill these knowledgeable contents to deliver awareness session on sexual and reproductive health and rights in their communities.
